Who does not like an aircraft in special livery? We are not talking about retro-jets here, not standard special liveries like Condor’s sadly famous stripes (still not a fan, sorry), but really unique, one of a kind and single execution liveries.
Lufthansa often play with their name and logo and reactivated their Fanhansa fleet of 6 Airbuss during the UEFA European Soccer Championship which was held in Germany in 2024, as well as the famous Siegerflieger – flying champion / flying winner – which was a Boeing 747 with a new name, introduced after Germany won the soccer world cup in 2014.
Brussels Airlines also has a few aircraft flying around with special liveries, including Tintin in a submarine, from Rackham’s Treasure’s album – a bit scary to paint an aircraft as a submarine if you ask me, as there still more aircraft in the sea than submarines in the skies… – and a few others. They also had a special livery for Tomorrowland’s festival and Aerosmurf, who smurfed their fleet but has now been smurftired… I mean, retired.
The best part of it? If you feel like a livery artist, Brussels Airlines looks for the next special livery and will let it to the public. Contestants have until September 27 to submit their designs before an internal jury will make a preselection. At the beginning of October, everyone will be able to vote for their favorite design…
There are a few rules though:
- The livery must display something Belgium is known for and Belgians are proud of, while avoiding being too cliché
- Beer, fries, and waffles are excluded
- Participants must be over 16 years of age and live in Belgium or have Belgian nationality
- AI generated designs are not allowed
Knowing how Belgian people can be funny, inspired and a bit crazy, we can only suppose that the jury will have a fun but hard time picking the candidates for the final vote.
You can find the detailed rules as well as a blank A320 template for your design here.
So grab you pens, think Atomium, Manneken Pis – or may be not this one, though – and submit your ideas. With some luck and good votes, your design could take the air for the next five years.
Last but not least, the winner will receive a business class duo-ticket for any European destination per year for five years.
